1, 2 Days Surf Tour Packages

Itinerary

  • We will pick you up from one of our central city locations. The pick-up time is dependent on the tides each day – you will be advised of this once you book and choose your location.
  • We will then head out to the beach with the best conditions to learn to surf on that day. Usually it is out to Piha Beach on the west coast, due to the consistency of the surf, but we will go to any beach within 1 hour 45 mins on either the east or west coast. The radius of operation from Auckland City is indicated on the map.
  • The journey to the beach will take you through picturesque countryside and, if you haven't brought lunch with you, we can stop for you to grab food and drink so you have the energy you will need for a “full on” day.
  • When we get to the beach we will run through the dynamics of the beach and explain the hazards and conditions of the day, there you learn about rip currents, how to recognise them and understand why and where we will be surfing.
  • The boards that we have are the best to help you learn. We will give you your wetsuits so you can change, apply your sunscreen and then you will be ready to head on to the beach to continue your first lesson.  Once on the beach you will learn about your surfboard, how to control it, how to safely go out into the water and catch a wave...and then ultimately stand up and ride your wave to the beach!  If you are more advanced we will tailor the tuition to your ability.
  • At lunch time we will stop and relax on the beach for a quick break, giving you the chance to eat, apply more sunscreen and have a bathroom stop before heading out for your second lesson. It is now your chance to work on the points raised in the first lesson and really perfect those techniques.
  • After a full day of seeking the best waves on offer, learning, challenging yourself, and speaking your newfound surfing “lingo”, a surfed-out you and crew will be heading back to Auckland City content in the knowledge that you have had a better day than those poor souls in the concrete jungle!

5, 7 and 14 Days Surf Tour Packages

Itinerary

On this trip you will quickly make new friends, many who become life-long, and enjoy Northland’s amazing scenery through the eyes of a surfer. This trip is not just your average tour – for many it is a life changing experience. You will live the life of a surfer and get a taste of true kiwi culture!

Tangaroa and Tawhirimatea, the gods of the ocean and the elements, ultimately dictate our itinerary. Surfing is all about tide and weather conditions, hence the flexible nature of our trip, but the itinerary will endeavour to cover most if not all of the points below:

  • We will pick you up from central Auckland on Sunday morning and transport you up to our own exclusive lodge (Ahipara Surf Lodge) which is absolute beachfront and located at the base of ‘90 Mile Beach’.  The drive is approximately 4.5 hours. En route we will make a few pit-stops to pick up some lunch. Once settled into our accommodation we normally head out of the beachfront pad and begin our surfing adventure!
  • Every morning you will wake to the sound of the ocean, an exquisite sun kissed beach with no one around, and a breakfast spread giving you all the energy you need for your exciting day!
  • Every evening, after a full day of surfing, we’ll enjoy a yummy dinner while reminiscing about the waves and watching the sun slowly fade into the ocean.  We’ll discuss the conditions for the following day and form a game-plan together before we hit the sack and rest up for another day of epic waves.
  • Throughout the week we will cover surfing theory – surfing rules, surf conditions, rips, currents and tides – and each day we will individually work with you to slowly and consistently build your skills and advance you to the next level.
  • Each day we will set out on a mission to find the best waves in Northland. This could mean driving on the beach to get you to secluded surf locations, enjoying the surf right in front of the lodge or heading to the east coast to chase those waves.  Each day will be different and always an adventure!  Some days, if the conditions suit, we could be off for a dawny surf at sunrise. For some this is regarded as the highlight of their surf tour...being in the water as the sun slowly rises giving the ocean a beautiful orange tinge is an unforgettable experience.
  • During those hours in the day when we aren’t in the water there are many other options and fun things to do.  We can choose to do something as a group or just enjoy some down time to ourselves – whatever will give you the most out of your trip!  We could visit the Ancient Kauri Kingdom, go on a hunt for some Tuatuas or the tasty green-lipped mussel or just use the time to ask all those questions about anything surf-related.
  • One day during the week can be set aside as a rest day and can be used to try out some other activities.  We have teamed up with some other awesome tour operators to arrange discounted prices on activities for you that are usually offered to operators and employees only!  See 'Additional Information' tab for more details.
  • Before you know it, it’s the end of the tour and you won’t believe how quickly the week has gone by! You’re body aches but you can’t stop smiling. You’re hooked on surfing, the addiction has begun...but we'll squeeze in one last surf session before it’s time to leave.
  • Allow us to transport you back to Auckland while you relax and reminisce on your week of epic adventure...unless of course you have heard the ocean calling and you are remaining with us for another week in paradise…
  • If you have already chosen or choose to extend your stay then it is time to let the waves take you on a journey.  At this point, you are truly starting to understand the ocean and how she moves and you are seeing a stunning improvement in your surfing ability.  Meet up with the new group for the next week and prepare to let the sea set you free!

Learning to surf is all about

  1. Having access to the right equipment - which we provide!
  2. Finding the waves that best suit your ability - we’ll make it happen!
  3. Being given the right instruction- we’ll show you how it’s done!

Most of our customers are beginners but many intermediate and experienced surfers take this trip because we find the best waves to suit all abilities.

For the new surfer, having experienced surfers on board is a bonus as it will greatly improve your surfing skills just by hangin with them. The only drawback is that your vocabulary will change and words like ‘pits’, ‘gnarly’, ‘A frames’ and ‘going off’ will start rolling off your tongue.

You will quickly make new friends and enjoy Northland’s amazing scenery through the eyes of a surfer. This trip is not just your average tour, for many it is a life changing experience. You will live the life of a surfer - “Only a surfer knows the feeling” Quoted by Billabong.

We have our own exclusive lodge (Ahipara Surf Lodge) which is absolute beachfront located at the base of ‘90 Mile Beach’. The advantage of our location is that we have the pick of three different coasts to surf at (west, north and east). Directly in-front of the house is a beautiful sand bottom beach break which is just perfect for beginners to intermediate and long board surfers. You will surf in un-crowded conditions and the tours frequently have the beach to themselves! Hard to believe, but it’s true.

Throughout the week we will also cover surfing theory - surfing rules, surf conditions, rips, currents and tides. On one of the evenings we will use some of the footage taken to help you see what you can improve on. Seeing yourself surf while an experienced guide is giving you tips on your technique is a great tool to develop your surfing.

This is the crème de la crème of surf adventures! Nothing is better than awakening to the sound of the ocean and looking through blurry eyes at an exquisite sun kissed beach with no one around. Then after a full day of surfing, sitting back and relaxing with a drink in one hand and camera in the other reminiscing about the waves and watching the sun slowly fade into the ocean.

Daily Itinerary

Tangaroa and Tawhirimatea, (the gods of the ocean and the elements) ultimately dictate our itinerary. Surfing is all about tide and weather conditions hence the flexible nature of our trip. We base ourselves in Ahipara and head out every day chasing the best waves northland has to offer.

Day 1 (first surf)

The search begins! We depart Auckland and head to the far north to our beachfront pad, Ahipara Surf Lodge.  The drive is approximately 4.5 hours. On-route the bus will make a few pit stops to pick up some lunch on the way.

Once settled in to our accommodation we normally head out in-front of the house (Ahipara Surf Lodge) and surf until sunset. (1 surf).

Day 2 (2 surfs)

We will find the best waves in Northland. This could mean driving on the beach to get you to secluded surf locations. Dinner, drinks and/or a movie (Endless Summer 2 is a classic) to complete the day followed by a much needed sleep.

Day 3 (2 surfs)

If the conditions suit, we could be off for a dawny surf at sunrise. This for some is regarded as the highlight of their surf tour. Being in the water as the sun slowly rises (giving the ocean an orange tinge) is an unforgettable experience.  After a well deserved breakfast we may cover the theory lesson this day. This is also the time to ask all those questions about anything surfing related.

Day 4 (2 surfs)

Expect more of day 2 and day 3. Maybe a sand-boarding mission or a hunt for the tasty green-lipped mussel! By evening our surf pilgrimage will bring us home for our final night at Ahipara Surf Lodge.  Surf photos and videos are studied and pointers are given.

Day 5 (1 surf)

You won’t believe how quickly the week has gone by! You’re body aches and you can’t stop smiling. You’re hooked on surfing and the addiction has begun. It’s time to leave... kicking and screaming back to the concrete jungle, Auckland. We either surf out in-front of the lodge for one last wave or we chase the swell on the east coast as we make our way home. We arrive in Auckland late Friday afternoon around 5pm.

Bonuses: Unforgettable sunsets and sunrises, wicked memories, new friends, dolphins, whales, wild horses and sand-dune boarding just to name a few.

Your Guides

All our guides are internationally recognised ISA surf coaches and hold a minimum level 1 endorsement. They have been trained in surf safety and hold a current first aid certificate for your safety.

Adventure Activities

Ahipara is an adventure playground! You can swim, walk along the beach, play golf, go fishing, go mountain biking, sand boarding or take a quad bike tour. To be honest surfing twice a day will burn you out. If you have the energy or want to take a day out from surfing there are plenty of options.
