Portugal is all about beautiful beaches, historically and culturally rich cities, stunning countryside, picturesque coastal towns and villages soaked in sea-faring traditions and lots of sun. Surfing Portugal is all that and much more. Its 850 km of coast is lapped by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea which means the country itself is colored with an enticing blend of cultures. When looked at from a surfing point of view, these hundreds of kilometers of coastline mean something else again – long, long stretches of beaches full of left and right peaks, all punctuated with inlets and coves with further wave riding options of varying break types. As if this isn't enough to entice wave hunters, it is also home to Supertubos - Europe's best beach break and arguably one of the best on the entire planet.
From surf camp to luxury resort
Portugal surf trip options seem to have something intended for keeping all-comers happy – from total novices to experienced, advanced surfers and from budget conscious travelers to seekers of comfort and even luxury holiday standards. There are choices to suit those looking to party and there are choices for those looking for retreat, tranquility and seclusion.
Most of the Portugal based surf holiday options come in the form of surf camps and although full-on partying options are out there, the Portugal surf camps tend to come in rather more laid back packages, perfect for those who want to socialize without excess.
Surfing in Portugal
Portugal is an all-year round surf destination thanks to the miles of coastline which picks up all the Atlantic swells. The biggest of these occur from October to April. Every type of break is represented – beach breaks, reefs, river mouths and points.
The majority of our Portugal surf trip options are based in Ericeira, Peniche or the Algarve region which is further divided into South Algarve and North Algarve/Alentejo. Ericeira, Portugal's surf Mecca, offers up mostly reef breaks producing hollow, powerful waves while Central Atlantic Peniche, home to the iconic Supertubos, has an almost bewildering wave variety crammed into the area. Both are known, along with the North Algarve for their high quality and world class waves. The South Algarve, which although lacking the higher wave quality of Ericeira and Peniche, provides an opportunity of riding less crowded waves and, if you are prepared to explore a little, even the possibility of finding waves going unridden – until you get on it that is.
Other bases on offer are Beira Litoral in Northern Portugal and culture rich Lisbon and Porto.
Surf camps, houses and hostels
As already mentioned, surf camps are the most commonly found trip option served up as surf lodges, surf houses and surf hostels, Accommodation options are very diverse but include tents, dorms, shared and private room choices and there is even the chance to spend your surf holiday in a tree house. Non-surf camp options come in the form of surf resorts.
Facilities and activities offered by each operator are incredibly diverse – you could find yourself sampling anything from snorkeling to swimming pools, dolphin watching to diving and massage to mind surfing in a gently swaying hammock.
Waves and surf breaks for all levels
Thanks to a huge variety of breaks of all types, Portugal surf holidays are suitable for all levels of surfing ability. They are a particularly good choice for beginners and anyone looking to up their surfing level because all of our operators offer classes and coaching options either included in the price or as an add-on service. More advanced self-equipped surfers are attracted by the great deals which can be found through accommodation only, self-catering options with guiding services and spot transfer offered as an extra incentive.
Because most of the surf trips offered are surf camp based, they are particularly popular with groups and solo travelers looking for a budget friendly, social vibe. However, as many of the Portugal based camps offer mid-range options too, couples and families also find them a great fit for their needs.
Variety of packages
