Safety & Rescue

You want to be safe? So do we!

Billa and his whole crew know those mountains like no one else. He and his Kashmiri guides have all grown up here and are skiing in the Himalayas since young age. Back then there was no gondola and they started skiing as little kids on a very basic gear. Billa is the first officially registered ski-guide in India authorized by the J&K Tourism Departement.

All of our foreign international guides have undergone a professional education in avalanche science as well as in heli-skiing of course. This education includes a first aid course. The whole crew is working with us since 2010 and therefore they also know our heli-area as well as our kashmiri guides. The Pir Panjal Range in the Himalayas provides a pretty steep and a very serious terrain. These are the Himalayas, nothing else. If you want to ski here you should be aware of that fact!!! Before your journey to Gulmarg, we recommend you to gather as much knowledge as possible concerning avalanches, backcountry skiing and safety. On your first runs we will take you into our avalanche controlled bowls near the gondola. We will check your knowledge and skills in handling the gear like abs-bags, transceivers etc.. Of course you will receive a briefing by us on how to handle the gear. Lots of our runs are north facing which makes it safer concerning avalanches. As a serious skier you should know: avalanches can always happen! For your information: in 2010 unfortunately 16 Indian army soldiers and a few foreign ski tourits lost their lives in an avalanche. Sadly it is to state that those accidents happened here were triggered by foreign tour operators not knowing our mountains precisely enough. As you can see it is essential to have a guide beside you who you can rely on. We have 2 Helicopters of Eurocopter AS B350B3e. Running a heli-business is only safe as long as you operate with two helicopter at the same time as one is always on standby for a back up and to offer rescue possibilities. Of course all our backcountry clients are safe while our Gulmarg powder guides are always in touch with our pilots at the heli base. We also provide a snowmobile for bad weather conditions and tree access with a rescue sled. Should you have an accident while skiing, there´s a first aid hospital here in Gulmarg we’re happy to let you know, that we have a first aid hospital here in Gulmarg. We could also fly you into Srinagar hospital where there is a helipad to land for us. Billa knows a lot of doctors from his childhood on as he went to school with them. We do advise you to have your own personal travel and/or ski insurance!

Helicopters

Our new AS350B3e Eurocopter Helis (2012 model) make Kashmir Heliski the safest in the Himalayas. We’re the only company in the Himalayas who never had any accident. Our helicopters are specially designed and adjusted for higher altitude and cold temperatures. With this type of helicopter if the weather allows we can go up to an altitude of 5.000 meters

The seating capacity of the AS350B3e is generally 5 passengers plus 1 pilot. We usuaslly will carry 4 clients only per run as we want you to be comfortable and enjoy this fantastic experience.

Non-Flying Days

Heli-skiing depends a lot on the weather conditions and the daily avalanche risk. You’re going to ride the mighty Himalayas!!!

However on non-flying days you don’t need to sit around in your hotel having beer or coffee the whole day (although you can ). We do have the possibilities to take you skiing and / or snowboarding on days when the weather is not cooperating for heli-skiing. Gulmarg has one of the highest gondola and ski lift which gives access up to 4.200 meters (Mt. Apharwat). The gondola has two stations; the 1st station gives you access up to 3.300 meters and the 2nd phase goes up to 4.200 meters. In addition there’s one chair lift on stormy days when the top section of the gondola  remains closed. It gives access up to 3.600 metres. You will be riding the full day with our guide while the lift ticket is provided.

Another option on non-flying days is given by our Gipsy King. A very reliable and decent four wheel drive. It’ll give you access to ski down to some local villages. For e.g. down to the valleys and villages like  Babareshi, Tangmarg or the Drang Valley, just to name a few. Those village runs are up to 700 vertical meters and include forests and tree runs which are of course naturally untouched. The gaps between the trees look like a giant slalom course. You can do 8 – 10 runs a day by using one of our four wheel drive with chains on tires. If you want to do some additional exercise like ski- or snowboard-touring to Monkey hill, which  is a 30 minute hike, we will provide you all touring gear including touring skis, split boards, snow shoes from our ski shop, this is all of course free of charge.
