LowPressure’s Stormrider Surf Guide says

Sri Lanka, the teardrop-shaped island falling from the southern tip of India, is the best-known and busiest surf destination on the Subcontinent. The south coast of this extraordinarily beautiful country is open to the same regular, long distance SW swells that pepper Indonesia. However, unlike Indonesia, unfavourable, local, monsoonal wind patterns arrive during the prime May-Oct swell season, bringing onshore winds. This means that most surf travellers, wanting to score glassy conditions, venture here during the much quieter swell period of Dec-March, but even at this time of year waist to head high waves are common and the conditions are perfect. The centre of the south coast surf scene are the handful of reefs in the resort town of Hikkaduwa.

To the East much of the beachbreak is shoredump most of the time but there are a lot of rocky coves that can transform unruly swells into something worth searching for. Check out Dickwella, Nilwella, Tangalla and the extensive sands leading to Hambantota, before the main road heads inland to skirt the massive wilderness of the Yala National Park and onto the sandy right points of Southeast Sri Lanka.

Condition descriptions provided by the Operator

The season in Ahangama starts in November through till April, during this time we take our guests to a variety of beach and reef breaks. We have our very own reef break ‘Rajith’s point’ (named after one of our managers and surf teachers) which is only 3 minutes drive from Lanka Living via tuk tuk. The other waves we surf are also in close proximity to our camp, in addition we take our customers on full day trips to the many surrounding area breaks that are not more than three hours drive away. Because we have access to so many great surf spots it does not really matter what the conditions are, we will find the perfect, protected spot with plenty of waves for everyone, we also try to beat the crowds as much as possible.
