Snowboard and Ski Bariloche at Alta Patagonia

Near Bariloche, Argentina the ski resort of Catedral Alta Patagonia has recently seen massive investment resulting in new ski lifts, new terrain, the most modern resort base in South America, including a  shopping mall.  Ski Catedral is also highly praised by local snowboarders and skiers as the place to snowboard and ski in Patagonia.

The Southern side of Cerro Catedral Alta Patagonia offers excellent hikes to the steep chutes, bowls and cliff bands of "Punta Nevada" and "La Laguna" on the backside.

With over a decade guiding here, skiing Bariloche has become one of our favorites due to the fun inbounds snowboard and ski terrain and the extensive backcountry with easy access, including Refugio Frey Hut, for backcountry ski touring.   Snowboarding in Bariloche is amazing due to the ski resorts modern snow parks, fun tree lines and open bowls with deep powder.

Bariloche Ski, Alta Patagonia is also famous for powder skiing, snowboarding, and phenomenal views of the National Park Nahuel Huapi, Mt. Tronador of 3554 meters (11,660 ft.), downtown San Carlos de Bariloche and onward into Chile's Lake region.  Bariloche ski packages and guided trips are available via PowderQuest

This European style ski resort, opened in 1938, offers you great days to explore the slopes, and fantastic views under the shadows of the Andean Condor frequently seen soaring above Catedral.

Cerro Bayo Ski Resort

Based just 5 km from the beautiful town of Villa La Angostura, PowderQuest first visited Cerro Bayo in 1999 on a research trip. We returned during the spring ski season of 2000 along with a crew of riders, photographers and writers from Snowboard Canada Magazine and Chasing Winter, we scored waist deep dry powder and endless untracked runs for two days.

The backcountry hiking in Cerro Bayo is great, accessing steep bowls and some of the best tree runs in South America amid spectacular virgin forests
In 2007 the resort was purchased by a private investment group.  Gone are the days of founder Jean Pierre Raemdonck and his friendly family run resort. Now marketed as an upscale "boutique" resort, (it has a ways to go), Cerro Bayo will be seeing expansion and additional investment over the next years including rumors of a gondola from the town of Villa La Angostura and lift accessed terrain expanding into the Provinciales zone.

Regardless of what becomes boutique and what does not, the fact remains is that this mountain is one of our favorites due to its easy backcountry access and laid back local scene.

Chapelco Ski Resort

Chapelco is located near the town of San Martin de Los Andes and above Lacar Lake in National Park Lanin in the gorgeous Lake District of Argentina. Chapelco ski resort hosts one of the best local ski and snowboard scenes in South America.

Chapelco's high-speed quad, gondola, and access into the steep backcountry bowls make for unforgettable days in the Southern Andes.
New ownership has installed several new services including a new chairl ift that increases speed from the base to mid mountain, and future expansion looks to push deeper into the back bowl creating more expert lift accessed terrain.
