Extended Description

Alaska Heli Skiing

Come Experience First Class Alaska Heli Skiing with Black Ops Valdez!

Black Ops Valdez is the only operation of its kind. We specialize in the true Alaska Heli Skiing Experience!  From the moment you get to Valdez until you leave, you will experience the best of Alaska.  While our name may be newer to the area, we are not.  Black Ops Valdez is a team of highly skilled and trained Valdez heli-ski guide veterans, many of which have guided here for over a decade.  We operate Eurocopter A-Star B-Series 350 aircraft and have 12 maximum clients at any one time, Or three groups of four, each with a guide. This ensures that your experience is a personal one and eliminates waiting for the helicopter between runs.

We offer flight time, Hobbs time, packages only. Hobbs time is kept by a meter on the dash of the aircraft and turns anytime the pilot pulls pitch on the main rotor blades…this basically happens when the aircraft is flown in sustained level flight (to and from the skiing) anytime the aircraft is flown up in elevation (flying from the pickup to the top of the next run), or stabilizing the aircraft on a tricky landing. In the field, you pay to fly up, what you want to ski down.  Our heli packages allow for the ultimate freedom, allowing you to help make decisions on how your heli time is spent. Whether it’s flying out deep for some un-ridden peaks, lapping the classic runs close to home, or finding some better weather, it’s up to you.  We won’t make vertical foot or run guarantees.  Bottom-line, you are paying for the helicopter, and with our Hobbs time program, you will always know where your money is spent.

We can fit you into a group if you are looking to come alone, or you can put your own group together. Ideally, groups of 4, 8, or 12, with like skiing abilities are preferred.  The more honest you are with your ability before you get here, the better your experience will be!

Top off your heli experience with the finest lodging available in Valdez, Robe Lake Lodge! Overlooking Robe Lake, between Valdez and Thompson Pass, we are perfectly located for flying a variety of terrain. We offer gourmet dinners featuring Alaskan style cuisine.  Enjoy the hot tub or sauna cabin after the best day of skiing in your life…this is unlike anything else here…a true Alaskan Experience!

Alaska Snow Cat Skiing

Experience Alaska snow cat skiing in Valdez and Thompson Pass!  Black Ops Valdez offers Alaska Snow Cat Skiing at over a half dozen operating areas spread from Valdez to the Interior side of Thompson Pass, giving us the largest permitted snowcat skiing area in the U.S.  This allows us a variety of options depending on snow conditions and weather at any given time of the year. Our snowcats are a versatile and a less expensive alternative to heli-skiing, and much easier and casual than sled or snowmobile skiing!

Enjoy riding up the mountain with up to fifteen people in warmth and comfort. We operate two restored Thiokol Sprytes that are in near new condition and are truly part of American skiing’s history. The Spryte was widely used in the 1970’s and 80’s at resorts and ski areas across the country. Many of these cats are still in operation today!

Although our machines are a bit older and smaller than some commercial snowcat skiing operations, they are just as affective at climbing and accessing the same terrain.  Our machines are inspected daily to insure your safety, and that your Valdez snowcat skiing experience is a positive one!  Our machines are also capable of being repaired much faster in the event of something breaking down, due to the simplicity and availability of parts in Valdez.  This combined with having two machines, allows us to keep you out skiing!

There is no doubt that we cannot access much of the terrain that you can with a helicopter or snowmobile.  But, that being said, we have terrain that ranges from mellow to extreme in each or our operating areas.

We also offer snowcat tours and private charters.  If you are looking to book the cat for the day for your skiing crew, or are just looking for a tour through the most breathtaking scenery Alaska has to offer, we can accommodate.

Snowmobile (Sled) Skiing

Explore the Chugach near Valdez and Thompson Pass with Black Ops Valdez Snowmobile Skiing and Snowboarding!  Experience the area like no one else, and travel to zones and ski and board where only our experienced guides, who live and work here all winter long, can take you.  Whether you are just looking to explore the vast glaciers and amazing peaks of the Chugach on your snowmobile, or use a sled as your own personal “heli” to get your turns, we are the authority in the Valdez and Thompson Pass area.  Grey days, “down days” are nearly non-existent.  Even in the worst weather there is powder to tear up in the trees, pillows to drop, or glades to explore.   At less than half the cost of heli-skiing for a week, you can stay with us and ski and snowboard some of the same runs that people are flying to…and if you are willing to boot pack a bit, we can get to most of the heli-ski terrain. With the new lighter, more powerful snowmobiles (snowmachines) that are out today, we can get you to some of the most spectacular terrain imaginable.  Add a snowcat or heli option to combine the best of both worlds.

Snowmobile Tours

We offer a variety of snowmobile riding experiences for all ages and skill levels. Valdez has an amazing trail system surrounding the entire valley: Valdez Glacier, Robe Lake, Hogback Trail, East Peak Area, Sugarloaf Mountain, Solomon Gulch and Lake, Alaska (Alyeska) Pipeline Corridor, Old Valdez Town Site, and Mineral Creek Canyon. Most of these areas can be ridden to directly from the lodge and offer some of the most scenic views of the Valdez Port and surrounding mountains available.

If mountain riding is more your thing, there is no place on earth with more amazing peaks, bowls, and open valleys so easily accessed. We can wake up and ride Hogback Mountain directly behind the Lodge or Solomon Gulch “Area 51″ across the bay…Or we can trailer the machines closer to another location we choose to ride for the day. Either way, here more than anywhere else in the world, we are able to use our fuel riding in the mountains instead of getting to them. Just 10 minutes up the road, the Richardson Highway and Thompson Pass wind through the Chugach Mountains, and allow direct access to the best riding of your life.

Remote Ski & Snowboard Touring Basecamp

Enjoy remote ski touring and splitboarding from our new remote Chugach basecamp. Located at the far reaches of the Chugach Mountains outside of Valdez and Thompson Pass, you will find the most comfortable base for your adventure imaginable. Our camp consists of three 10×10 “Arctic Oven Tents” and a 12×18′ Galley Tent and common area. Each tent sleeps 2 super comfortably with cots, sleeping pads, and heaters. The Galley tent is where you can enjoy the best Alaskan meals in the bush you’ll ever have, along with hang out in a more spacious tent with others in the evening or when weather prevents touring.

The Arctic oven is the ultimate base camp tent. It is made right here in Alaska by Alaskans at Alaska Tent & Tarp. They know what extreme conditions are and made a tent to withstand the conditions. Turn on that heater at night and dry any wet gear out and have a comfortable place to hang out.

ArcticOvenSaleImageThe terrain around our camp is stacked with options to say the least. You may have seen our segment in TGR’s “The Dream Factory” where we expored the area for a few weeks filming some amazing lines. We will fly you and your party in to camp with one of our Astar helicopters, where you will find everything you need for a week long experience like no other!

Prince William Sound Ski Touring & Heliskiing

Our 53’ live-aboard vessel “Castaways” is the ultimate “mobile lodge” platform for Prince William Sound. Enjoy being in remote bays surrounded by wildlife and having a dry, warm basecamp for your adventure. Castaway’s can sleep 6 comfortably in its 3 private staterooms, along with having 2 full heads.

With a full modern kitchen, you will also enjoy some amazing meals while on your trip, from fresh seafood from the waters of PWS including spot prawns, halibut and Copper River red salmon to steaks on the barbeque. When you get up in the morning you can expect a full hearty breakfast from home fries, eggs and bacon to pancakes and sausage before heading out on your ski tour or heliskiing day.

In the living area there is plenty of seating to hang out and relax along with a 32’ flat screen TV for watching movies on those days the weather delays skiing. The whole boat boasts granite counter tops and tables, along with leather couches to hang out on.

Castaway’s also has a 12.5KW diesel generator below deck allowing us to power a small city if needed. This allows us to have an amazing heating system onboard and you can expect 70 degree inside temperatures after those long cold or wet days. On top of that in the back “drying room” we have boot dryers, and hanging racks for all your clothes.

The best seat on the boat on a sunny day is the front outside couch where you can enjoy some of the most amazing scenery in the world as we cruise out to Prince William Sound. Your ski adventure can be solely human powered where 3-5,000 foot runs to the ocean are the norm. You can also opt to call in the heli to assist in lifting you to some of the most remote areas of the Chugach Mountains that make up and surround the coastal Alaska area of Prince William Sound.
