The Ski Terrain - Lyngen Alps and Islands
With over 60 summits over 1000m flanking the Lyngen Fjord's shores, skiers are provided with an incredible choice of terrain. Lyngen Lodge is located 500km inside the Arctic Circle and due to the high Northern latitude the sun's glancing rays have less effect on the snow. By mid February the polar nights have been already replaced with 7 hours of sunshine by mid May it's the midnight sun.
Avergage summit heights are around 1000m to 1200m but on the high glaciers of the main Lyngen Peninsula there are summits over 1400m with Jiehkkevarri being the highest at 1834m above sea level.
This guide highlights only a selection of mountains to suit all levels of skiing experience.
Safety and medical assistance
An excellent infrastructure is set up in the region. Injury rescue is provided by helicopter from Tromsø¸ city or from the Military. This service is reliable and efficient and provides full support throughout the region.
Wildlife
Various species of whales are in the Lyngen Fjord all year round and during your visit it is very likely that you will see whales during one of your boat journeys. Land animals include Moose, Wolverine and Lynx, all are extremely timid and seldom seen but you'll see the tracks regularly throughout the region while skiing.
Accessing the mountains
1. Boat - Spirit of Lyngen
A major part of the ski concept is accessing the skiing via our specially designed boat.
You will board the boat wearing ski boots and carrying on skis. Transfers are between 15 to 45 minutes and drop offs are directly on beaches, headlands and piers. More on the boat and Ski by boat in Norway
2. Directly behind the lodge
Behind the lodge is the Sorbmegaisa and the Store Haugen (home mountains), they consist of four major summits from 1200m that span along a prominent ridge offering brilliant tree and open face skiing with views directly above the fjord.
3. By Vehicle
The lodge advantage is being able to access the inland sheltered terrain located east of the lodge. This region offers magnificent summits and fantastic link up tours ending directly back at the lodge.
Reaching the summits
Using wider off piste skis with ski touring bindings rent lodge skis here » attaching special adhesive skins under the skis and freeing the heel from the binding allows for uphill travel, these skins are then removed and the heel fixed as in normal skiing for the downhill sections.
There are advanced weeks and introduction weeks for those who have never toured before see our introductory to ski touring courses norway here »
The downhill
Vertical ascent and descent amount and the type of terrain skied depends upon group level of fitness and skill. You can expect to be climbing between 1000m to 1400m per day and skiing the same down. At sea level there is a lot more oxygen in the air than at altitude in the Alps so you have around 20% more stamina in Lyngen. You'll be surprised how good you'll feel while climbing up.
The Terrain
There are three terrain zones throughout the Lyngen Alps and surrounding islands where the skiing takes place.
Zone 1
The region behind the lodge Sorbmegaisa including Rotsund. This area is usually filled with powder, the slopes are gentle to moderate and our favourite when there's fresh snow.
Zone 2
North of lodge and accessed by boat are the islands of Ulø¸ya, Kågen and Arnø¸ya. These islands offer various spectacular summit crossings from one side to the other offering everything from gentle slopes to big open mountain skiing.
Zone 3
The Lyngen Peninsula is filled with dramatic summits, large glaciers and hidden valleys providing some of the regions most spectacular skiing. This zone requires use of the boat as we access both deserted bays and rocky headlands for the skier drop offs.
Mountains
Store Reindalstinden
Height: 1334m
Ascent: North couloir
Descent: East Face
Location Lyngen Alps Peninsula
Degrees 50 max average east face 45/50 degrees.
Skiers: Graham Austick & Ali Street
Opposite the lodge across the fjord rises the Store Reindalstinden directly from out of the fjord. The name means Reindeer Valley Summit when translated. It's local name is Jeksel which is Norwegian for the molar tooth as the top glacier and summits appear to look like a giant molar shape. The mountain is quite technical to ascend and descend as the terrain is steep and the ski descent exposed.
If you'd like to ski a first descent or any of the interesting steep lines in the Lyngen Alps we also offer private guiding 1:1 or 1:2 ratios.
Storehaugen
Location: Kaafjord Djupvik
Height: 1142m
Ascent slope: West face
Ski descent: West and north possible
Average angle: 28 degrees
Character: Lodge home mountain providing long open slopes with a consistent angle. Holds powder well and also offers excellent spring skiing. Forest open and provides good lines.
Safety note: Large summit ridge cornice. Due to moderate angle on main west face it is a good choice during challenging avalanche conditions provided experienced route choice is made.
Sorbmegaisa
Location: Kåfjord
Height: 1288m
Ascent slope: W & S/W
Ski descent: West, South and South West
Character: The Sormegaisa offers huge potential for freeriding with many high quality mountain lines to choose from. Sorbmegaisa classic routes range in the 30 to 32 degree angle but there are more serious exposed descents in the mid 40 degree angle that are often highly avalanche prone. Lower mountain offers good tree skiing and open slopes in the mid 20 degree range above Egnesdalen.
Safety note: The Sorbmegaisa is exposed to strong South West winds (prevailing) as this quickly builds high slab avalanche risk on the sides of the big bowls of the Sorbmegaisa, this mountain is only recommended for those highly experienced in avalanche prediction and route finding.
Middle ridge and the the classic right bowl and ramp system ascending from Egnesdalen are the less angled ascents although good route finding is essential on these ascents. The central bowl splitting the north and south summit of Sorbmegaisa has an average angle of 40 degrees is only recommended in very stable conditions.
Nordmannviktinden
Location:Kaafjord
Height: N.Summit 1335m
Ascent slope:North starting from Nordmannvik village
Ski descent: North
Character:A wonderfully long wide mountain ridge that soars above the fjord with spectacular views of the Lyngen Fjord. This mountain is superb in the midnight sun.
Safety note:The mid section at 700m is steep above the Nordmannvikdalen and holds slab snow creating a potential hot spot. Big attention after after strong SW winds (prevailing)
Kjelvagtinden
Location: Rotsundet - Uloya
Height: 1064m
Ascent slope: West
Ski descent: West
Character: This mountain is also suitable for poor weather days and when steeper slopes are less stable. Kjelvagtinden is a wonderfully wide mountain face that stretches what seems for endless turns tp the beach. The summit ridge to Blaatinden is a classic traverse.
Safety note: Huge cornice forms on the summit ridge, give back from the edge! This whole island is highly exposed to the strong prevailing southly winds.
Blaatinden
Location:Rotsund - Uloya
Height: 1142m
Ascent slope:
Ascending from Uloybukta E to N
Ascending from Havnnes W to S
Ski descent:
Beach pick up West face
Traverse East or West to Havnnes or Uloybukta
Character:There are many variations from the summit of Blaatinden. It's a legendary ski with long slopes and the west beach pick up is only accessible by specialized boat.
Safety note:The traverse from Uloybukta can hold slab snow during and after S to SW winds. A risk zone at 700m N/E of the ridge.
Svartfjellet
Location:Kaafjord
Height: 1183m
Ascent slope: East
Ski descent: East
Character:A unique character to Lyngen away from the fjords. This mountain is high alpine looking and the central bowl is over shadowed by high towering rock walls. The ski is long and perfectly angled with superb forest skiing.
Safety note: A steep section must be crossed before you enter the main bowl this can hold slab snow due to local cross winds that are common here.
Goahtegaisa
Location:Kaafjord
Height: Summit 1291m.
Ascent slope: NE
Ski descent: SW
Character:A link up with Stortinden and descend to Kippeldalen to Nordmannvik.
Safety note:Large faces along the entire Kippeldalen - late spring sees some huge late afternoon wet avalanches here, but keep an eye on slab as these faces are big and steep above.
Storekagtinden
Location:Skjervoy
Height: 1228m
Ascent slope: West or East
Ski descent: West or East
Character:The Storekagtinden is a world class ski. The summit is dramatic the climb demanding and the ski exposed to nature. Much of the mountain is slightly convex so it seems as if you're skiing directly into the sea. There are many variations from this summit and all are serious undertakings and experience in good snow judgement and route finding is essential for a safe tour.
Safety note: High winds can cause concern to the snow pack here. It's steep and there are many convex slopes which can be problematic for slab avalanches during unstable conditions. This mountain requires experience, confidence and good weather. The west face climb is steep and exposed and often hard wind pack in the mid section and requires solid climbing techniques.
Storsandnestinden North Summit
Location:Kagen
Height: 930m
Ascent slope:West by boat or East from Trolldalen.
Ski descent:East or West Couloir
Character: Excellent variation with many skis and climbs combined into one tour if starting from the West face by boat.
Safety note:Generally a good tour for bad weather days but good navigation skills are required in this area. there are many slopes to choose from and care should be taken as there is also some steep terrain to be crossed if linking valleys to the south into Stokknesdalen.
Storegalten
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1219m
Ascent slope: West
Ski descent: West
Character:Storegalten offers one of the longest consistently angled slopes in the Northern Lyngen Alps. It's steep and provides exhilarating skiing. It can be combined with a traverse from Gammvikblaisen.
Safety note:Upper section is often whipped by the south and north winds. The ascent route takes the northern shoulder of the face which is quite often rocky. The couloirs in the central face providing excellent lines are around 40 degrees steep and often hold cross loaded slab snow.
Gammvikblaisen Storundtinden
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1219m
Ascent slope: N/E
Ski descent: Various
Character:This wonderful glacier access some incredible terrain. It's possible to ascend Storundtinden and descend back to Gammvika or traverse to Storegalten down the impressive west face to Nordlenangen or via a technical ski down to below Peppartinden to in Gammvika.
Safety note:A closed glacier with steep summit exit slopes to Storegalten and Peppartinden which can prove slab danger in high winds.
Gamviktinden
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: Approx 1000m
Ascent slope: East
Ski descent: East
Character:Approx height only known here as it depends from where you ski from. This is a technical and serious route requiring good mountaineering judgement additional to skiing. The glacier mid section is seraced and depends on snow years if it's possible to descend the left exit couloir. The ascent is either via the yt Gammvikelva or the in.. taking the right hand steep face that avoids the glacier seracs.
Safety note:Sound mountaineering skills required because you may have to negotiate ice seracs on the middle section.
Rappgamtinden
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1000m approx height only
Ascent slope: East and North
Ski descent: East and North
Character:Ascending the Rappdalen you enter into an amphitheatre atmosphere with towering peaks and couloirs coming at you from all sides. It's a wonder just to walk in this hidden valley. The ski is from a hidden glacier to the north.
Safety note: The beach landing is often complicated by high seas and anchoring is not possible here. Big mountain terrain and only accessible in stable snow conditions.
Stortinden East Couloir
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height:900m - height of couloir
Ascent slope: East
Ski descent: East
Character:The East couloir is possible only under stable conditions and can be skied early season due to the permanent snow base inside the couloir from 150m above SL. However it's best skied in June/July.
Safety note:The couloir ends with a 4m drop into the sea - a slip on the last turn and you're fish food..
Storetinden East Couloir - was skied by Graham in August from the boat Spirit of Lyngen.
Couloir was a whopping 900m on fairly steep skiing right down to the sea - life jacket needed! The couloir has permanent snow inside so can be skied all year.
Nordausttinden
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1132m
Ascent slope:South from Vaggasvatnet
Ski descent: East and North
Character:Challenging ski under taken in compact conditions with solid cover below 300m. Sea state key to pick up, often exposed to high sea. Avalanche prone area from south/east aspects above Storskora. Recommended early summer.
Guide ratio: 1:1
Safety note:5m drop into the sea from Storskora.
Reindalsblaisen
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1327m
Ascent slope: East and North
Ski descent: East and North
Character:Ascending the Reindalen below the north face of Reindalstinden is quiet a moment. This massif is the king of the Northern Lyngen Peninsula, it's impressive from all angles you happen to see it from. The Reindalsblaisen is further up the valley and offers a fine ski inland amongst impressive peaks.
Safety note:You pass under high faces up the Reindalen and it's best to visit this valley when conditions are stable over head
Tafeltinden
Location:Lyngen Alps
Height: 1395m
Ascent slope: North East
Ski descent: East or South East
Character:A spectacular journey across the Strupbreen Glacier that passes under the majestic Strupbreentinden and Lenangstindane that would be at home in the high ranges of Alaska. No visit to Lyngen is complete until you've stood and seen the view from the summit of Tafeltinden.

Character:Kavringtinden is a classic and offers a fine ski from the north summit down long consistent slopes down to Lyngseidet.
Safety note: High winds often load the mid to upper slopes of the ascent route.
Kavringtinden is exposed to winds and not recommended when the south winds prevailing is blowing.
The Climate
The Gulf Stream flows along the entire Norwegian coastline which in turn warms the ocean and fjords creating a temperate climate, resulting in the fjords never freezing. Snowfall is plentiful too. You will not encounter extreme cold temperatures at sea level. The coldest recorded temperature at the lodge in January was - 16 degrees Celsius. On average, winter temperatures fluctuate between 0 and - 5 degrees C. On the summits however on a windy day the temperatures can reach -20 degrees C. Our equipment lists cover all appropriate clothing that will be needed.
Climate Statistics for Lyngen Region
The Lyngen Alps are located deep inside the Arctic circle and what the European Alps experience at around 1000m is what Lyngen experiences at sea level. The sun's rays glance off the earth's surface this far north so you have less melting and less slushy snow during April and May.
Polar night darkness disappears end of January and there is 7 hours of sun light in mid February. The light between February and March is totally unique and you have the feeling of skiing in a permanent sunrise and sunset atmosphere this is the best time to experience the true Arctic light and the Northern Lights phenomena. The sun rises 15 minutes earlier each day.
Best Month?
February until the middle of March - 8/10 hours light / temperatures -5 / powder skiing. Typically a powder period on slopes facing north, south, east and west, the sun is not strong enough to effect the structure of snow to any great effect.
+ amazing light throughout the entire day and strong northern lights.
- can be cold
Middle of March until Middle April - 10/16 hours light / temperatures -2/0 degrees / powder skiing. A mixture between powder and spring skiing as the sun is now higher in the sky and you'll experience 15 hours of sunlight by the second week of April.
+ good snow pack, lots of sun and snow down to the sea, great fishing
- you have to leave after a week
Middle of April until middle of May - 16 - 24 hours sun / temperatures 0/+5 degrees / spring skiing. Typically spring conditions with the possibility of powder during weather front systems, the sun is stronger and effects the snow with strong solar radiation. The midnight sun appears middle May with 24 hours of sun light.
+ lots of sun and get to ski the mid night sun from middle May
- the snow can receed back from the sea line

Whale Watching
To view a Humpback Whale is a moment you feel extraordinarily privileged and the experience is an unforgettable memory. Humpback Whales are Baleen Whales that are a type that filter food through plates rather than having teeth. Adults range in length from 12 - 16 meters and weigh approximately 36,000kgs they are truly massive. Their shape is distinctive, having long pectoral fins and a huge knobbly chin/head. Often very acrobatic, they can surge from the water exposing three quarters of their body from the water and slapping down on their backs.
They can be found all over the world but only feed in summer in the polar regions on krill and small fish. They migrate 25,000km to tropical climates to give birth before heading north to colder waters to feed. They are now protected from hunting worldwide since a 1966 and there is an estimated 80,000 in the world today. One of them is in Lyngen Fjord! They also sing songs for 20 minutes at a time and repeat for hours - divers can feel the vibrations and studies believe it's mating orientated or perhaps they just like singing.... Our nature sea safarisinclude Whale Watching.
Humpbacks do not arrive every summer in the Lyngen Fjord so we recommend contacting us to find out their current movements here Whale Watching Norway Our sea safari tours observe the resident whales of our region which are the harbour porpoise, Springer whales, and occasionally the Orca.
Northern Lights Visits with Activities
From September to April the Northern Lights are visible, however due to snow cover and winter activities January to March is the main season.
The lodge is well positioned to experience the spectacular Aurora Borealis "Northern Lights" located well away from city lights you'll enjoy undisturbed viewings under star filled skies in a dramatic mountain and fjord setting. You can combine the following activities - drive your own dog sled with instruction, snow shoeing, sea safari by boat, horse sledding, photography courses, cross country skiing.
Dog sledding
Dog Sledding with a difference - drive your own team of 8 dogs after special training and supervision. This takes place in the southern region of the Lyngen Alps close to the Finnish border. Deep Valleys and high mountains provide the perfect dog sledding experience.
This tour can also be combined with snow mobile safari also. Please enquire here for options during your Lyngen Lodge Northern Lights visit.
Snow Shoeing
Snow Shoeing is the perfect way to walk and gain access to the snow covered forests and mountains directly behind the lodge. Guided tours can be tailored to suit all levels of fitness. There are numerous walks that lead to wonderful view points high above the Lyngen Fjord. Our classic is the tour takes 3 hours up to a spectacular Hammarsletta view point where coffee and sausages are cooked over our open fire inside a lavo tent.
Snow shoes are like modified tennis racquets that strap to your feet. They have been used for thousands or years by indigenous communities that lived long winters in the snow. They were originally made from binding tree branches together, however today's snow shoes are made from lightweight aluminium and all you need is a good pair of walking boots. They work by spreading your weight over a larger snow surface area which prevents you from sinking and enables you to float on top of the snow while exploring the winter landscape.
Sea Safari Winter
The Lyngen Fjord Winter Sea Safari is a favourite for many guests who visit the Lyngen Lodge. The journey begins aboard the high speed boat the Spirit of Lyngen. First port of call is the historic fishing village of Havnnes on the island of Uløya to see the "Dry Fish" hanging process. Boarding the Spirit again you will circumnavigate Uløya island and visit the bird sanctuary nestled between the two picturesque islands of Follesøya, here it is possible to sea the grey seal and some early settling migratory birds.
Heading further to the eastern shore line of the Lyngen Fjord you'll experience the mountains and shear cliffs of the Lyngen Peninsula at close quarters from the deck of the Spirit boat, here nesting along the cliffs the giant Sea Eagle (Europe's largest bird or prey) can be seen. You'll have the chance to deep sea fish for giant cod fish, spot whales and finally visit the spectacular glacier fed Strupen Bay.
Horse Sleigh Norway
A tranquil journey on a horse drawn sledge along the snowy shorelines of our surrounding fjords will provide an unforgettable romantic or family experience. Your journey will incorporate lunch seated on reindeer skins beside an open fire in the middle of a snowy wilderness under the Arctic skies.
We can arrange champagne lunches and special romantic requests while horse sleighing.
Northern Lights Photography Courses
To photograph the Northern Lights is a task that baffles many an experienced photographer! The Aurora lights tend to come quickly and the anticipation is so intense that when they arrive you are so in awe that you fumble with you settings while you can't help but simple stare upwards and the result is mad clicking and images that you knew you could have captured better.
Advanced photographic equipment is a clear advantage and cameras should have a few features such as manual operation options, adjustable ISO settings and long exposure capabilities and be tripod mountable. You can rent Nikon cameras from the lodge.
Our courses will take you through the ideal settings for your camera and we'll lead you through the processes so that you will obtain the best images possible. Post shooting we'll take an in depth look at how to process the image and bring out the best details and quality in Mac and PC based programs.
Locations will be within close proximity to the lodge. This is an ideal location as there is low light pollution which is essential for great captures.
Aims will be to shoot deep space Northern lights and night Aurora landscapes.
Courses are run over weekends from January to February.

Midnight Sun skiing in Norway
Skiing under the midnight sun is a merging sunset and sunrise lasting between 4 and 6 hours and is simply an incredible experience that will never be forgotten. We ski locations with aspects facing both north and east during the period of May and the time from 11pm to 5am. To the north over the Islands of Kågen, Fuglø¸ya and Arnø¸ya the deep red sun skips over the ocean's horizon and casts a lingering pink light over the slopes we ascend and descend. The snow quality in May on the northern aspects is often powder above altitudes of 600m and firm snow below. Our midnight sun tours have become a late season favorite so booking early is advisable.
Your Ski level for Skiers and Snowboarders
This section below informs you of the skiing skill levels needed to attend certain weeks and which personal fitness levels you'll need so you'll make the most out of your week and be appropriately challenged.
Three dedicated levels to categorize your skill and experience:
Skill Level 1
Introduction to ski touring/boarding - you need to be a competent off piste/back country skier who can link turns down the fall line in a variety of snow conditions. It's important that you are confident with your own ability and when the snow gets heavy and challenging your skiing skill confidence will not disappear. Previous ski touring experience is not required as part of this course is learning the skills for skinning up hill and what's involved in day touring. Fitness level 1 (see below)
Skill Level 2
Competent - you have day toured before, it may have been from a lift in resort even a short multi day tour but importantly you are used to skinning 1-3 hours. You are looking for long classical descents and are able to ski confidently in all off piste conditions without hesitation or confidence worries. Fitness level 2 (see below)
Skill Level 3
Advanced - you have the skinning experience of level 2 and above but are an advanced off piste skier and looking for challenging steeper slopes to ride. These weeks are high powered with a focus on multiple ascents and high powered skiing. Fitness level 3 (see below)
Fitness - How fit should you be for touring?
If you have a personal good fitness level you will enjoy your touring and skiing more as your body will be stressing less and you'll walk uphill in your comfort zone enjoying the views. If you arrive at the lodge having done nothing before hand then most likely you'll struggle uphill, be exhausted at the summit and the ski down will be a battle and you'll spend most the evening in the hot-tub nursing your tender legs...
You don't need to be a super fit marathon runner either, that's because your guide will not race uphill, ski touring is a journey and best enjoyed at a comfortable pace with stops every 45 minutes to an hour to hydrate and check on team moral.
Fitness for touring is about cardiovascular strength and stamina. It's not just working the legs and lungs but also strengthening your core muscles too is extremely vital to efficient skiing.
Fitness Level 1
Intro to ski touring. You'll begin with short walks and progress throughout the week to reach 3 hours skinning. You need to be able to exercise in the gym for 2 sessions of 45 minutes with a pulse rate of 130bpm with a 15 minute rest between sessions. Or alternatively go hill walking for 4 hours at home with a day rucksack.
Fitness Level 2
Competent level. You'll be skinning from 2-4 hours with regular stops. It's important to be confident with your preparation phase and in the gym you should be able to work cardiovascular exercises 130bpm for 3 sessions at 45 minutes sessions with 15 to 20 minute rests.
Fitness Level 3
3rd level is about stamina as you'll be be skinning multiple ascents between 1 and 3 a day and some ascents maybe 4-6 hours long to reach summits 1500m above sea level. You may be required to load your skis on your pack and boot climb a couloir etc. This is not "iron man" but the more stamina you have the more skiing you'll pack in.
Groups
You can form your own group or join as an individual. We will need info on your skiing experience and then we'll allocate you into the correct week and level.
Snowboard Touring in Lyngen
The Lyngen Alps are ideal for snow boarding as the majority of descents are literally fall-line Summit To Sea without long toe or heel side traverses or flat valley push-outs. You can enjoy the essence boarding on the long seemingly endless lines down to the beach.
Snowboarders should be technically competent to ride in all types of snow conditions. We recommend split snow boards for all riders. We do have the Ascent Ski system for rental at the lodge but recommend these for riders under 65kg weight only. The Ascent is a two piece aluminum ski with permanently fixed skins and a snowboard boot binding attachment. Above all split boards are the safest and most reliable way to board in Lyngen Alps.

3. Intermediary services
LUEX facilitates the provision of travel-related products and services by Service providers in the form of travel modules and services. LUEX is not a tour operator and does not deliver, own or control any of the travel-related products and services on offer. The travel-related products and services are delivered directly by the Service provider. The offerings provided by LUEX are intended for natural persons. In this context, the Traveller / Group leader making the booking must be at least 18 years of age. A Group leader aged 18 years or over must book for under-age travel companions. The offerings are primarily intended for Travellers from Germany. In utilising this offering, the Group leader making the booking promises that they are authorised to act on behalf of their travel companions, in particular to arrange travel-related services and to conclude contractual arrangements in the name of the Travellers. The Group leader is liable to LUEX as the joint and several debtor in addition to the individual Travellers for the payment of the travel-related products and services booked. Legally binding declarations received by the Group leader are deemed to have been received by all Travellers in the tour group.
4. Bookings
To the extent that no further commitment periods have been agreed, the following shall apply: By filling in the booking templates and confirming the booking procedure, the Traveller/Group leader commissions LUEX to finalise the intermediated procurement with the Service provider. A confirmation of receipt from LUEX with respect to an order immediately after the Traveller/Group leader has transmitted the data does not constitute a binding confirmation of the intermediated travel-related products and services.
Immediately upon receipt of the booking, LUEX shall assess the availability of all the booked products and services from the Service provider/s. Following this assessment, the Traveller/Group leader shall be issued a booking confirmation. The Traveller/Group leader is obliged to check this confirmation carefully immediately upon receipt. If information appearing on the confirmation or in another document is incorrect or incomplete, the Traveller/Group leader is obliged to inform LUEX immediately - in text form if possible. Alterations at a later point in time can only be considered if LUEX could reasonably be expected to make such changes. Unreasonable alterations are such changes in particular that involve additional costs for LUEX, unless the Traveller/Group leader reimburses these costs.
A binding agreement between the Traveller and the respective Service provider shall only eventuate when the binding booking confirmation has been transmitted to the Traveller/Group leader; the automatic LUEX confirmation of receipt is not a booking confirmation.
The following applies when a Group leader makes a booking for several Travellers: With their booking, the Group leader confirms that they are permitted to legally represent the group members (Travellers) and that the Group leader is permitted to make and receive declarations on behalf of the group members. If travel vouchers are dispatched, they shall be sent solely to the Group leader for the whole tour group. Payments shall be processed exclusively through the Group leader with debt discharging effect.
The contractual obligation of LUEX is limited to the proper intermediation of the booked travel-related products and services. The contractual obligations of LUEX do not include the delivery of the booked product or service.
5. Payments, cancellation charges
LUEX is entitled to demand payment of deposits and outstanding amounts in accordance with the general terms and conditions as well as the terms and conditions of payment of the Service provider of the mediated product or service. Payment shall be collected as instructed by the respective Service provider. It is possible that the method of payment accepted by the Service provider may differ from the standard modes of payment used by LUEX or in Germany generally. The details are to be found in each of the offerings respectively. To the extent that nothing to the contrary has been agreed, the following shall apply:
Following receipt of the payment request, payment of the deposit indicated on the payment request is to be made in a single payment within one week by means of the payment method indicated. The deposit shall be at least 25% of the total price of the travel-related products or services that have been booked. The outstanding amount for the travel-related products or services is to be paid no later than 30 days prior to the commencement of travel as a single payment by means of the payment method indicated without any further request for payment. In the case of tour groups, the Group leader is responsible for ensuring consistent payment processing. The total price of a tour booked at short notice (within 30 days of tour commencement) is due immediately.
If due payments are not made or not made in full and the Traveller/Group leader does not pay after a reminder with a final due date, LUEX or the Service provider are able to withdraw from the particular agreement, unless LUEX or the Service provider is already responsible for a significant flaw, failing or shortcoming at this time. If the Traveller is responsible for the cancellation, LUEX or the Service provider can demand compensation in accordance with the agreed fixed rates for compensation. If nothing else has been stipulated within the offer/travel confirmation, the fixed rate in the event of the Traveller cancelling more than 30 days prior to departure is 25% of the price of the tour. The Traveller/Group leader is entitled to provide evidence of lower costs or costs that did not eventuate, while LUEX is free to calculate and demonstrate substantially higher costs.
LUEX assumes no currency risks. In order to minimise currency risks, LUEX shall exchange the travel payments received into the target currency of the country of the respective Service provider as soon as possible after receipt of payment. In the event of major currency fluctuations, the Traveller/Group leader shall indemnify LUEX against any proven currency exchange losses. Reimbursements shall be made solely by means of bank transfers in the currency of the recipient. Bank fees and charges shall be borne by the Traveller/Group leader.
If the Traveller/Group leader pays by bank transfer, LUEX can only facilitate a smooth booking process if the Traveller/Group leader uses the designated booking ID in the purpose field of the bank transfer which is specified in the request for payment. Otherwise LUEX may not be able to assign the payment to the correct booking. A failure to do that correctly can result in the cancellation of a trip in the worst-case scenario.
If the Traveller wishes to book not as a private individual, but as a business traveller acting on instructions or as a legal representative, this must be noted already during the booking process and cannot be subsequently altered. This can have taxation consequences and should therefore be carefully considered.
The customer shall receive a payment receipt in the form of a booking confirmation from LUEX showing the total price, either paid or to be paid to the Service provider.
6. Alterations, cancellations, reimbursements
In the event that a confirmed booking is modified or cancelled, LUEX is to be contacted as quickly as possible in this matter such that a possible solution can be sought in consultation with the Traveller/Group leader. Additional costs that result for LUEX or the Service provider shall be borne by the Traveller/Group leader, whereby LUEX reserves the right to invoice a minimum fee of €50 for changes demanded solely by the Traveller.
Should there be a modification or cancellation by LUEX / the Service provider, LUEX shall also contact the Traveller/Group leader as soon as possible and seek a possible solution.
LUEX notes explicitly that as an intermediary LUEX cannot assume responsibility for the performance of the Service provider. In particular, LUEX offers individual travel-related products and services to exotic destinations. The Traveller recognises that booking and processing these products and services are more difficult and that a higher degree of flexibility is expected of these than for mass tourism.
7. Complaints and ratings
Should the Traveller be dissatisfied with an aspect of the travel-related product or service received in a particular case and wish to submit a complaint, they are to approach the Service provider or their representative directly at the location during their current stay so that this person can attempt to solve the problem. LUEX recommends notifying the Service provider in text form that documents the shortcomings, if possible with the aid of photos.
If the problem cannot be resolved during the stay, the Service provider must be contacted within 30 days of returning from the trip. The Service provider should then respond to the correspondence according to the applicable laws and regulations. Receipt should be confirmed in 14 days and a full response received within 28 days. If this is not the case, an explanation for the delay should be received from the Service provider.
Should the travel-related product or service not match the description on the LUEX platform, the customer must approach the Service provider or their representative directly at the location during the customer's stay. LUEX shall support customers with respect to their complaint. LUEX is to be informed of the facts involved in the situation as soon as possible in order to be able to assist in finding a solution.
The Service provider is to be contacted immediately in the event of flight or transportation problems. Customers are to check information and the general terms and conditions given to customers via the Service provider before the commencement of travel.
8. Visa, passport and travel regulations
The Traveller/Group leader shall pay attention to the special visa, passport and travel regulations for the Travellers and their country of destination. LUEX makes every effort to inform customers as comprehensively and accurately as possible. To the extent that LUEX draws attention to particular details, this can only be considered as non-binding information. Considering the high number and frequency of possible amendments to regulations, Travellers/Group leaders are requested to contact the relevant embassy/consulate for the particular destination. In this respect LUEX can assume no responsibility whatsoever for any assurance, guarantee, currency or accuracy of the information. The information provided by Travellers’ ministries of foreign affairs are a reliable source with respect to many travel destinations.
It is the sole responsibility of the Traveller/Group leader to ensure that all Travellers are in possession of all requisite travel documents (passport, Visa, etc.) at the commencement of travel and that all Travellers fulfil the health requirements.
9. Insurance
To the extent that it is not expressly offered, insurance cover does not constitute part of the travel-related products and services offered. LUEX recommends that customers take out travel insurance, in particular travel cancellation cost insurance and in certain circumstances overseas travel insurance, including an overseas health cover component. LUEX names a reliable partner offering the relevant insurance policies to its customers at: http://www.luex.com/info/insurances.html.
10. Liability, responsibility
LUEX depends on the information provided to it by the Service providers with respect to the details of the travel-related goods and services. LUEX has only extremely limited opportunities to check such information with respect to their accuracy and completeness. Consequently, LUEX is unable to provide any guarantees or assurances with respect to the completeness, accuracy or currency of such information. The same applies for any other information made available by third parties.
LUEX is not liable for the availability of the travel-related product or service at the time of booking or for the performance of the booked travel-related product or service by the Service provider.
Within the scope of its performance obligations, LUEX is only liable for any losses that may result in the following cases, irrespective of legal grounds: The statutory regulations shall apply with the following restriction: Liability or minor negligence on the part of LUEX or its vicarious agents is excluded, provided that neither an essential contractual obligation was breached nor is there a case of initial incapacity, impossibility or default on the part of LUEX. Otherwise liability is limited to the value of the travel-related products and services booked, in any case however to predictable and typical losses. The exclusions of liability or facilitation shall apply in the same manner to the executive bodies of LUEX, as well as to their vicarious agents.
Travellers and Group leaders shall be liable to LUEX for each and every reservation/booking that is made in bad faith or with deceitful intent or with erroneous or incomplete personal data. The opportunity to book travel-related goods and services may only be utilised in order to make legal bookings as a Traveller or as a Group leader for a third party. At the same time, in utilising the offerings the Group leader guarantees that they are authorised and are permitted to act in the name of fellow travellers. In the event that there is a breach of these guarantee, the Group leader is liable without limitation to LUEX and their respective Service providers for the losses resulting from the aforesaid person’s actions.
In many countries there are safety standards that differ from those generally found in Europe, Australia or the USA. Travelers/Group leaders are strongly encouraged, also in their own interest, to access information once again immediately before commencing travel in accessible sources, such as the internet pages of the Foreign Office, with respect to changes in the travel regulations and safety warnings for the country of destination.
11. Final provisions
Should business terms and conditions or parts of the agreement be or become invalid, the validity of the remaining parts of the agreements shall not be affected.
Amendments or additions to all agreements, including a divergence from these general terms and conditions, are only possible in text form (written, by fax or e-mail). Oral agreements require written confirmation to be valid.
