Valhalla Catski

Canada: British Columbia

Dig in to the legendary Kootenay powder and let your backcountry adventure begin with the relaxing and exhilarating experience of Valhalla Catski!

Skiing and Riding

Valhalla is a Norse word referring to a warrior's heaven or paradise - and heaven is an apt word for these majestic mountains of South Eastern BC.

The Valhallas are located in the fabled Selkirk mountains of BC.  This area is home to a stunning uninhabited backcountry, and is famous for the exquisite, light powder that falls in great abundance all winter long.

Our runs are consistent, uninterrupted fall line descents, welcoming to both skiers and riders. As we cater strictly to stronger skiers and riders - our groups turn out to be very compatible on the mountain.

Valhalla guests typically clock 7 to 13 runs a day, or 13,000 to 18,000 ft of vertical.  Runs vary from 1200 - 3000 ft, taking advantage of the best snow and fun factor available on the mountain each day.  The ride between runs allows you just enough time to share stories of the awesome turns you just had, while snacking on Carolyn's delectible homemade delights!

We run two snowcats in our 21,500 acres of terrain ( twice the size of Whistler Blackhomb combined!) each carrying 12 guests and 2 guides. Regardless of weather, the snowcats allow us to ride limitless fresh lines all day - everyday.

NEW THIS YEAR!  We have a brand new snowcat arriving this season.  Fresh off the blocks, this PB 400 has just joined our fleet of Piston Bullies.  We are now able to offer a reliable back up snowcat in case of mechanical failure.

Valhalla guides are friendly, experienced professionals who know where to find the best snow and quality turns each day.  With two guides per group of 12, we can cater each line to suit the needs of each specific group.

Heli Skiing

In 2006, Snowwater Heliskiing purchased Valhalla Powdercats forming a backcountry skiing and riding adventure heavyweight.

Now offering a truly unique and exciting big mountain multi-adventure trip including ski resorts, hot springs, snowcat and helicopter skiing package know as The Kootenay Sampler.

For the resort and catskiing portion with Valhalla, you stay in the charming heritage city of Nelson, BC, at the Prestige Lakeside Resort and Convention Centre. For the heliskiing portion, you will soak up the mountain chic environment at Snowwater's stunning backcountry timber frame lodge.

Snowwater runs an exclusive operation accommodating only 12 guests at a time

This ensures an intimate, personal atmosphere for your vacation. It means we can provide an unparalleled experience of the highest quality including the best in staff, food, accommodation, terrain and snow selection.

At Snowwater all heli trips are private

That means you'll heli ski in groups of 4 with a guide and a maximum of 3 groups skiing 150,000 acres at a time! Unique in the industry is Snowwater's bad weather backup in our luxury snowcat ensuring that, no matter what the weather is doing, you are guaranteed to ski or ride every day!!

Ability and Safety

Valhalla Powdercats holds the safety of all guests and staff as our main priority.

We adhere to industry standards and hire only competent, certified, professionals with years of relevant experience. All of our staff undergo rigorous annual training procedures. As a result, our safety record is impeccable.

Our friendly guides are all AMCG and/or CSGA certified professionals, trained and current in methods of snow safety, weather analysis, emergency medical techniques and ski guiding. Early each morning, our guides meet to evaluate weather conditions, snow stability and terrain based on field observations and external industry data. Daily decisions are made and continuously reassessed in the field to ensure optimal safety and fun.

You are expected work as a team, listen carefully to your guides and obey their directions and cautions to help reduce possible harm presented by the many obstacles and dangers of wilderness skiing. Your attitude has a great deal to do with your own well-being in the mountains. We provide guests with all the required safety equipment and the training to use it. As is standard in the industry, signing of a waiver by all guests is required.

Your skiing or riding skills should allow you to ski most expert trails at ski areas in a variety of snow conditions without falling. This is wilderness skiing which means snow conditions vary from day-to-day and storm-to-storm. There are no groomed runs so you must be comfortable with traversing and skiing or riding in all types of snow including powder or its less forgiving variations. We are looking for keen skiers and boarders that want to ride all day long.

Fitness is as important as ability. No matter how strong your technique, a day of skiing our terrain can be frustrating if you are out-of-shape. Why waste your important quality time gasping instead of grinning? Being rested and in good physical condition for this adventure is important for both a pleasant experience, and safe one.

Our guides are professionals at balancing exciting and challenging skiing while meeting the needs of safety and enjoyment of the entire group.
