LowPressure's Stormrider Surf Guide says
Surfing Portugal
Despite the small size of Portugal there are literally hundreds and hundreds of breaks. With almost 2000 km coastline mainly exposed to the west Portugal picks up plenty of swells. All the year around. Peak season is autumn, winter and spring with regular ground swells lighting up all reef and beach breaks. Even during summer time there quite a high probability of finding good surf. Less regular and sometimes wind swells though. In general the power of the waves is second to no other area in Europe and plenty of waves are of highest quality.
Ericeira
As with Peniche, Ericeira has no shortage of Atlantic swell to play with. Numerous classic reef set ups, rocky headlands and small rivermouth bays shape the swells into world class waves such as Coxos. Ericeira can be considered the centre of Portuguese surfing with its concentration of classy breaks a mere 30km from Lisbon. It doesn’t quite have the wind protection of Peniche and big, stormy swells tend to favour the south-facing coast of Lisbon, but for consistent quality and challenging waves, Ericeira rules.
Ericeira is the Mecca of Portuguese surf and like Peniche, it offers a truly staggering variety of waves, crammed into just a few kilometres of coast. There’s something to suit every standard but unlike Peniche, most of these waves are rock bottomed and there is little wind or swell shelter. Coxos is the best known wave, a long, hollow world class right, but sitting proudly next to it in the quality stakes are the barrels of Pedra Branca and Reef. Such high class waves attract crowds and with Lisbon only a short drive away there are no shortages of surfers wanting a piece of Ericeira action. This lively and attractive town is a year round surf destination with the beach breaks to the south of town being the best bet in the small summer season and the reefs and points the main event for the remainder of the year.

Speak to any member of staff for guidance on which group suits your ability.
Looking for the best waves
The schedule of our surf lessons always depends on the conditions in the water, that’s why our surf school always chooses the lesson times according to the best tides, winds and conditions each day of the year. Before/after the lessons you can practice what you’ve learnt by yourself at our home beach if the conditions are considered safe for free surfing.
Level 1: Beginners Surf Course
The beginner category is for those who have never surfed before, or who haven’t surfed in a while and want to go through the basics one more time. It is a great fit for all people who are refining their techniques and gaining confidence. We’ll give you a fun introduction to surfing, and share the stoke when you catch your very first waves. We’ll make sure that you develop your skills in line with your level and that you’ll catch as many waves as possible while having fun with the other surfers.
Is it suitable for complete beginners?
A significant part of our guests at all camps are complete beginners, that’s why we offer lessons for complete beginners from Mondays to Saturdays and as you progress during your time at camp, so does the instruction you receive. Trust us, within your stay you might already be riding green waves with the help of our patient and experienced instructors and you will meet a new surfing family at camp that may stay friends for life.
Our beginner course
Your first surf lesson begins with an instructor teaching you the basics on how to handle a surfboard, paddle out, catch a wave and get to your feet.
Here are some fundamental steps you will start with at our camp:
- Safety intro and beach awareness
- Surf equipment explained
- Paddling technique
- Catching a wave
- Standing up on your board
- Surfboard control
- How to ride a wave towards the shore
- Improving your stance
- Surf awareness
- Improving your technique
Level 2: Intermediate Surf Course
The main difference between beginner and intermediate surfers is their autonomy in the water. To be suitable for the intermediate group you should be able to get up on waves on your own, have a very strong paddling ability and be comfortable in the water in general. If this is still a challenge for you, you will benefit more from the beginner course instead.
The instructors will help you to improve your skills, you will learn how to read the water, where to position yourself and how to turn on waves.
What can you expect from the intermediate course
This module is focused on getting to the outside (lineup) in waist high waves. We’ll teach you to catch green waves and ride the face of the wave instead of going straight in the white water. Our instructors will identify the important changes you can bring to your technique that will end up making a huge difference in your surfing style!
You will get personalised tips on how you surf and about what to improve as the quality of the waves you pick, the speed you are able to generate, your agility on the wave, Our team will teach you how to use rip currents and as well refine your timing while picking up the waves to surf etc. All these factors can truly make a difference in your learning path. The more you train, the better you surf and the more you’ll end up loving it.
Other important things you will learn with us in the Intermediate course:
- Paddling out techniques
- Sitting on your board
- Positioning yourself in the line-up
- Catching a wave towards shore
- Reading the ocean – Learning which waves to catch and which waves to rather skip
- Stalling and accelerating
- Going “out the back”
- Improve your stance
- Angled take-offs
- Riding unbroken waves
Level 3: Advanced Surf Coaching
To be suitable for the advanced group you need to be able to drop in confidently on 3ft+ waves, be comfortable surfing at low tide, and you should also have experience in doing top/bottom turns.
Other requirements for the advanced module are the ability to surf shortboards as well as the ability to duck dive, so if you’re not yet confident in head high or higher waves on your own we suggest trying to stick to the intermediate group for a while until you are ready for a bigger challenge.
For advanced and pro surfers
Our intermediate and advanced coaches work together very closely. They communicate their students’ progress with each other, so you might start in an intermediate course and be suitable for our advanced sessions after a few days already.
We’ll give you the knowledge you need to feel confident in surfing most breaks, focusing on entry and exit from the break and we will help you decide which peak is the best for your level of surfing.
Other important things you will do and learn with us in the Advanced course:
- Develop your Back and Forehand technique
- Surf awareness
- Develop your own style
- Video Analysis of your trainings
Our instructors know the best spots according to each individual's skill level and have a combined experience of 30 years surfing, they know many of the globe's top surf locations and are extremely familiar with Portugal's - and especially Ericeira's - best breaks. They will take you to the best spot for your level depending on tides and weather conditions. Each of them is an expert in judging surf conditions, such as time and location, and all have a European license for surfing standards.

Unreasonable alterations are such changes in particular that involve additional costs for LUEX, unless the Traveller/Group leader reimburses these costs.
A binding agreement between the Traveller and the respective Service provider shall only eventuate when the binding booking confirmation has been transmitted to the Traveller/Group leader; the automatic LUEX confirmation of receipt is not a booking confirmation.
The following applies when a Group leader makes a booking for several Travellers: With their booking, the Group leader confirms that they are permitted to legally represent the group members (Travellers) and that the Group leader is permitted to make and receive declarations on behalf of the group members. If travel vouchers are dispatched, they shall be sent solely to the Group leader for the whole tour group. Following receipt of the payment request, payment of the deposit indicated on the payment request is to be made in a single payment within one week by means of the payment method indicated. The deposit shall be at least 25% of the total price of the travel-related products or services that have been booked. If the Traveller is responsible for the cancellation, LUEX or the Service provider can demand compensation in accordance with the agreed fixed rates for compensation. If nothing else has been stipulated within the offer/travel confirmation, the fixed rate in the event of the Traveller cancelling more than 30 days prior to departure is 25% of the price of the tour. The Traveller/Group leader is entitled to provide evidence of lower costs or costs that did not eventuate, while LUEX is free to calculate and demonstrate substantially higher costs.
LUEX assumes no currency risks. In order to minimise currency risks, LUEX shall exchange the travel payments received into the target currency of the country of the respective Service provider as soon as possible after receipt of payment. In the event of major currency fluctuations, the Traveller/Group leader shall indemnify LUEX against any proven currency exchange losses. Reimbursements shall be made solely by means of bank transfers in the currency of the recipient. Bank fees and charges shall be borne by the Traveller/Group leader.
If the Traveller/Group leader pays by bank transfer, LUEX can only facilitate a smooth booking process if the Traveller/Group leader uses the designated booking ID in the purpose field of the bank transfer which is specified in the request for payment. Otherwise LUEX may not be able to assign the payment to the correct booking. A failure to do that correctly can result in the cancellation of a trip in the worst-case scenario.
If the Traveller wishes to book not as a private individual, but as a business traveller acting on instructions or as a legal representative, this must be noted already during the booking process and cannot be subsequently altered. This can have taxation consequences and should therefore be carefully considered.
The customer shall receive a payment receipt in the form of a booking confirmation from LUEX showing the total price, either paid or to be paid to the Service provider.
6. Alterations, cancellations, reimbursements
In the event that a confirmed booking is modified or cancelled, LUEX is to be contacted as quickly as possible in this matter such that a possible solution can be sought in consultation with the Traveller/Group leader. Additional costs that result for LUEX or the Service provider shall be borne by the Traveller/Group leader, whereby LUEX reserves the right to invoice a minimum fee of €50 for changes demanded solely by the Traveller.
Should there be a modification or cancellation by LUEX / the Service provider, LUEX shall also contact the Traveller/Group leader as soon as possible and seek a possible solution.
LUEX notes explicitly that as an intermediary LUEX cannot assume responsibility for the performance of the Service provider. In particular, LUEX offers individual travel-related products and services to exotic destinations. The Traveller recognises that booking and processing these products and services are more difficult and that a higher degree of flexibility is expected of these than for mass tourism.
7. Complaints and ratings
Should the Traveller be dissatisfied with an aspect of the travel-related product or service received in a particular case and wish to submit a complaint, they are to approach the Service provider or their representative directly at the location during their current stay so that this person can attempt to solve the problem. LUEX recommends notifying the Service provider in text form that documents the shortcomings, if possible with the aid of photos.

Your personal expert for this trip

Martin, LUEX's Head of Travel, started out skating in the UK, before escaping to the powder of Canadian mountains. He found his way to LUEX through years of chasing snow in winter and waves in France during summer. These days, he manages our surf and snow teams, while squeezing in surf trips to his favorite right-handers at Cokes and Kasabu in the Maldives, or powder missions to the tree-lined runs of Revelstoke. At LUEX, he combines his love for board sports with making sure every trip runs smoothly.
