Central America is a feast for the senses and the stomach with rich cultural influences, delicious food and stunning natural attractions. It is a land of volcanoes and rainforest, evocative ancient Maya ruins, beautiful tropical beaches and a warmth of welcome second to none. The unique flora and fauna and flourishing marine life has spawned numerous national parks where spotting colorful wildlife isn't just common but difficult to avoid.
Besides all its natural beauty and colorful culture, Central America has a wealth of both fun and challenging surf and a geography which makes it possible to ride both Pacific Ocean and Caribbean waves in one day, should you feel so inclined. You are so surrounded by nature here that Central American surfing options allow you to sit out back as pelicans flocks fly overhead and watch the monkeys playing in the jungle which borders the beach.
The majority of our Central American surf holiday options are based in Costa Rica, with its 'pura vida' hospitality, laid back vibe and well-established surf culture, while also included are El Salvador, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Surf camps and surf resorts make up the bulk of the choices, offering everything from simple beach huts and cabanas to penthouse suites but there are also self-catering options for the independent minded.
Surfing in Central America offers a diverse choice as regards wave type, with the opportunity of choosing from two distinctly different bodies of water – the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. On offer are mellow fun waves right through to shallow sucky reefs and the chance of year round waves in boardshort warm waters.
The Pacific typically delivers a year round, consistent supply of long distance swell from both north and south producing predominantly small to medium waves. However, don't be fooled – it can and does get big at times in the right spots with the right conditions. The Caribbean side surf options benefit from some of the strongest wind swells on the planet generated through seasonal storms which can create big waves. The seasons here are December to March and June to August when NE-E swells dominate with calm offshore winds.
Costa Rica's Pacific coast surf options of beachbreaks, river-mouths, points, reefs and outer reefs are typified by off-shores in the morning with the largest swells arriving during the gentle monsoon season of May to November. December to April is dry season (and called summer even though it is in the Northern Hemisphere), typified by smaller NW swells. Guanacaste has a 180° swell window in its favor while Golfo de Nicoya is packed with high quality left-hand points and powerful beach breaks. Limon, on the Caribbean side, offers powerful reefs and clean and consistent conditions.
Nicaragua's Pacific coast receives consistent swell offering offshore conditions for most of the year with some excellent beach breaks and points which are mainly left-handers.
El Salvador's south facing coast can only receive S-SW swells but luckily these are year round consistent with March to October marking the biggest swell months when offshore morning conditions are typical. El Salvador's previous turbulent history has meant that it has been slow to join the surfing fraternity which also means there are still many empty spots to be found full of mellow waves and the highest density of quality points in Central America.
