Wild Morocco

Of course we all know Morocco is in Africa but it is still very definitely part of the European surf scene. However, that is where any comparisons end because Morocco, the land of mosques and maze-like multi-colored markets, is distinctly exotic. A first timer here will be aware of an assault on the senses with sights, smells and sounds which can definitely be slotted into the brand new experience box. Fascinating and full of cultural diversity, it is also a land blessed with high quality waves – particularly point-break rich - and a coastline which picks up all the swell which the Atlantic chooses to throw at it.

Balmy winters make Morocco a very accessible destination for European surfers who want winter wave quality and swell but are sick of loading on the neoprene layers and freezing to death in car parks after every session. Add to that the fact that it is budget friendly and you might be starting to see why surfing Morocco appeals so much.

Surf Taghazout and the central coast

The vast majority of our Moroccan surf trip options base you at either Taghazout or Tamraght, situated on the country's central coast. These areas are a regular-footed rider's heaven with point after peeling point of perfect right-handers (and a couple of rare left reef breaks). Bottom conditions are typically flat rock and sand which mean, although the waves may be beautifully formed and at times powerful, overall conditions make it possible for intermediate level surfers to get a few point riding experiences under their belts, without total intimidation. Along with the various point breaks on offer, these areas also serve up predominantly right-handed reefs and mile upon mile of beach break options suitable for beginner levels upwards.

Taghazout faces south-west, thanks to the quirk of a geographical feature, on a coast which is actually north-west facing. This means that when other locations receive cross shore winds, Taghazout has off-shore conditions, ideal for holding up the high quality waves which roll in here.

Taghazout and Tamraght are peppered with many named spots squeezed into a relatively small area. The best known are Anchor Point (Ankas) – capable of holding huge swell, Mysteries, La Source, Killers – an all-level suitable point which breaks on smaller swells, Hash Point, Banana Point - which also has a beach break option and Devil's Rock – a right handed sand bar suitable for beginners. However these names are really just the tip of the iceberg.

Although it is possible to surf Morocco all year round, the optimum surf season runs from October/November until March when the swells are large enough to fire up all the points.

Surf camps, hostels and resorts

The vast majority of surf Morocco options are offered in the form of budget to mid-range surf camps with shared and private room types which include dorm facilities as well as single, twin, double and triple rooms.

Your Moroccan surf camp accommodation might be in the form of apartments, surf house or villa rooms and sometimes situated directly at a break so you can check the conditions each morning without stirring too far from your bed.

If you have something a little more secluded and luxurious in mind then you might like to opt for one of the Moroccan based surf resorts. Or, for those with an explorer in their soul, there is also the option of going on a surf-safari with a multi-based road trip package.

Great value for money from budget to luxury

The budget nature of Morocco based surf camp options along with the social vibe, which typically comes as part of the deal, make these trips popular with solo travelers and groups looking for a mix of fun, quality waves and something offering great value for money. The mid-range up to luxury options attract families and couples and anyone who enjoys the more comfortable home-from-home extras.

Surfers of all levels are catered for from total novices through to pro level. However, as nearly all the Morocco surf trip options offer surf coaching and classes they could be a great choice for beginners just starting out on their surf journey and any surfer looking to improve their standard.

Almost every kind of package is offered with Moroccan based surf holidays, ranging fromself-catering surf base only through to all-inclusive options and suited to all pocket sizes from budget to luxury.
