Surf Perfection in New Zealand

Just a step away from some of the world’s best mountains are some of the Pacific Ocean’s best waves. New Zealand usually sits first in skiers' minds when searching for their next snow sojourn, but surfers will find a myriad of uncrowded surf spots and hollow waves on offer in this untapped surfing mecca. Its North Island boasts beautiful spots like Raglan, heralded as “the Byron Bay of New Zealand” and claiming the country’s longest point break, as well as Piha Beach, an ultra-consistent stretch of sandbar not far from NZ’s capital, Auckland. Be Aware

New Zealand beaches are incredible to surf. The waves lay more power than most would expect and it’s not uncommon for the ocean to get a little nasty at times. Rips can be quite strong and frequently appearing on certain beaches. Lifeguards at popular Piha beach rescue an average of 150 to 200 people each year. So, if you’re bringing along non-surfers, make sure they listen to local lifeguards, follow swimmer safety protocols and respect the ocean. “Swim between the flags” is a popular saying down under, and smart visitors should do exactly that. There’s nothing much more to do beyond this than enjoy one of the Pacific Ocean’s most beautiful beach destinations.

Three Reasons to book a New Zealand Surf Trip

01

Take a helicopter to the surf

Hey, if snowboarders can do it, why can’t surfers? Okay, it sounds mildly pompous… the thought of taking a chopper to the lineup is borderline over-the-top. But wait till you board your private helicopter, surfboard in tow, and you’re delivered to surf breaks inaccessible by car. Thanks to New Zealand Heli Surf Tours, scouring the waves across NZ is an easy and incredible task. Contact LUEX today to book your first heli surf safari in New Zealand.

02

New Zealand is a magnet for unforgettable waves

New Zealand is pumped by swell from the Pacific Ocean. Its colder months are the ideal time to chase waves, with March to November boasting the most regular bout of swells. Waves whip their way up from the roaring forties, where water barbarians will find them thick, hollow and rippable. Despite its magnetism for high-quality surf, most spots generally lack the crowds of the better-known surf destinations around the globe. For those wanting local expertise to find them New Zealand’s hidden treasures, consider a heli surf adventure or a custom road trip. Contact LUEX for more information on how to make the most of New Zealand’s unforgettable surf.

03

Friendly locals down under

No locals come much friendlier than the warm, hospitable and chilled Kiwis. New Zealand has long boasted a rich and welcoming culture, aimed at community and sharing. It is also a place of big personalities, set upon the cultural input of the indigenous Māori people. Vibrant exchanges with strangers are common, and it won’t take visitors long to realise that positivity and humour are centric to the New Zealand spirit. No matter how far you travel to experience New Zealand, you’ll feel right at home thanks to the country’s friendly locals.
