LowPressure Stormrider Surf Guide says

Sri Lanka, the teardrop-shaped island falling from the southern tip of India, is the best-known and busiest surf destination on the Subcontinent. The south coast of this extraordinarily beautiful country is open to the same regular, long distance SW swells that pepper Indonesia. However, unlike Indonesia, unfavourable, local, monsoonal wind patterns arrive during the prime May-Oct swell season, bringing onshore winds. This means that most surf travellers, wanting to score glassy conditions, venture here during the much quieter swell period of Dec-March, but even at this time of year waist to head high waves are common and the conditions are perfect. The centre of the south coast surf scene are the handful of reefs in the resort town of Hikkaduwa.

To the East much of the beachbreak is shoredump most of the time but there are a lot of rocky coves that can transform unruly swells into something worth searching for. Check out Dickwella, Nilwella, Tangalla and the extensive sands leading to Hambantota, before the main road heads inland to skirt the massive wilderness of the Yala National Park and onto the sandy right points of Southeast Sri Lanka.

Conditions provided by the operator

We are based in a large bay that picks up most swell directions. The bay has numerous beach breaks so no danger from rocks, reef or crowds. This also means it is safe for swimming and younger guests. With tropical sea temperatures of around 26 degrees Celcius there is no need for a wetsuit here!  We have an offshore reef within the bay that we reach by one of our boats for empty waves. Being a fishing family of surfers we really know the local conditions and can help you go to the best spots at the best time, by boat or road. We are surrounded by a wealth of different breaks from fast, hollow reefs to more mellow rides perfect for improving your technique, all within easy reach using one of our local guides if required.  We have an onsite surf shop, selling wax, leashes, fins, sunscreen, tailpads, grubscrews etc etc. This is the only surf shop in the south after Hikkaduwa. We also do board repairs.
